Objectives

The focus of the subject is expanding the knowledge base of the use and context of English in today’s globalized world. It aims to introduce and raise awareness of research related to the language use features of English in the world of academia and professional contexts. On the one hand, it raises awareness of the specificities of academic language use while familiarising students with the typical genres of economic and business life in a multicultural context. Last but not least, the subject examines the need for expert translation and interpreting skills in a multilingual and international environment, even if the negotiating parties have a high level of language skills

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. • has knowledge of the language differences and their roots in the Anglo-Saxon world, • has knowledge of the structural features, coherence and cohesive elements of (English) scientific and business texts, • has knowledge of the specific features and background of the linguistic and cultural development of English as an international language, • knows the main differences between British and American Standard English in terms of pronunciation, grammar and usage, • has knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of translating terminology related to the different fields of specialisation, • has knowledge of current trends and applications in translation technology, • is familiar with the definition of the intercultural speaker.
Skills
  1. • Ability to recognise differences in the use of languages in business and in the academic world, • can recognise the quality of the coherence and cohesion of a text, • be able to recognise the main dialects of English, • Ability to recognise cultural differences in values and to maintain communication despite cultural dif-ferences in behaviour, • can assess the need for an interpreter-translator expert.
Attitude
  1. • Accepts the Anglo-Saxon written rhetorical tradition, • Strives to produce texts that are sophisticated, linguistically accurate and culturally sensitive, • Is open and ready to understand others and to change perspectives, • accepts that, despite a common language, there may be wide variations in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical correctness and culture of behaviour.
Independence and responsibility
  1. • Independently carries out individual tasks and thinks through the problems involved, • cooperates with fellow students in solving each task, • takes responsibility for the independent development of his/her communication.

Frontal lecturing involving students into class dicussions by occasional quizzes and contests; use of IT tools

A tanulási eredmények értékelése egy évközi írásbeli teljesítménymérés alapján történik. A tantárgy tudás és képesség típusú kompetenciaelemeinek komplex, írásos értékelési módja egy zárthelyi dolgozat formájában; a dolgozat alapvetően a megszerzett ismeretek alkalmazására fókuszálnak.
