Objectives

The course aims to develop the comprehensive, listening and presenting skills of B2 level students based on target language videos, primarily TED talks. Special focus is laid on skills related to work and learning.

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. The student knows the different types of English pronunciation and understands their differences.
  2. The student is familiar with the characteristics of up-to-date English (collocations, proverbs, catchphrases).
  3. The student is familiar with the main structural elements of presentations.
  4. The student is familiar with the properties of good and effective slides.
  5. The student knows the types of non-verbal communication, and understands their roles.
  6. The student is familiar with a number of typical presentation techniques.
  7. The student knows the difference between formal and informal spoken language (vocabulary, grammatical structu-res).
Skills
  1. The student is able to understand the different pronunciations of speakers of different nationalities.
  2. The student is able to understand lectures on various topics related to their studies.
  3. The student is able to have a deeper, more accurate understanding of cultural references.
  4. The student is able to express an opinion on the contents of lectures.
  5. The student is able to actively use vocabulary related to the topics covered by the course.
  6. The student is able to identify and evaluate the structure of presentations and the presentation techniques applied in a given talk.

Teaching methodology

During the course, videos (primarily TED talks) are taken as a basis for language skills development using a variety of teaching methods. The videos either address an aspect of the presentation process, or are good/bad examples for certain presentation techniques. As the course mainly focuses on the development of comprehensive and listening skills, students are given an opportunity to discuss various topics, with the help of cooperative techniques.

General Rules

Teljesítési követelmény: órákon való aktív részvétel (megengedett hiányzás 30%), valamint a félév során kiadott feladatok és/vagy dolgozatok teljesítése.

Performance assessment methods

A kurzuson az idegennyelv-tanulás általános sajátosságaihoz igazodva a számonkérés folyamatszerűen történik, amelyben választható elemek is vannak. Feladattípusok: • beadandó az órán vett valamelyik témával kapcsolatban (véleménykifejtés megadott lehetőségek közül vá-lasztva), • hallott szöveg értését mérő feladat, • 2-3 perces kötetlen beszámolót/összefoglalást szabadon választott témáról, • egy szabadon választott videóhoz feladatsor vagy glosszárium készítése, • videók összehasonlítása.

TVSZ szerint. A különböző típusú feladatokat a félév során elosztva, választható és különböző időpontokban oldhat-ják meg a hallgatók. A hallgatók szorgalmi időszak végéig lehetőséget kapnak a feladatok pótlására és javítására.

Topics covered during the term

A hallgatók érdeklődésének, szakmai irányának megfelelő TED előadásokat dolgozunk fel, ez határozza meg a témaköröket. A beszédek kiválasztásakor fontos alapelv, hogy a kurzus alapvető célja a munkához és tanuláshoz tartozó nyelvhasználati területek fejlesztése. A nyelvi tárgyak esetében nem készülnek részletes tematikák, mert a tárgy célja a készségfejlesztés, és nem egy adott (tematizálható) tudásanyag frontális átadása. Ez ad lehetőséget arra, hogy a tematika az adott csoport igényeihez igazodjon, a tárgy céljainak megfelelően.
