Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with basic skills and knowledge so that they reach A1.2 level (CEFR) in Hungarian by the end of their two-semester studies. By the end of the first semester, students will be able to communicate in basic situations, and acquire the most important cultural skills necessary for establishing daily contacts. Also, the will become open to Hungarian culture and society.

Knowledge
  1. The student is familiar with the Hungarian alphabet, aware of the phenomenon of vowel harmony and knows the most basic rules of Hungarian grammar (definite articles, word order of questions and answers, basics of declination, expression of possession, multiple nouns, etc.). S/he knows the basic rules of polite behaviour, and has basic knowledge of everyday Hungarian culture (food, drinks, sights
Skills
  1. S/he can get along in basic situations, ask for help, get information in everyday situations. S/he understands the basic words and conversation topics in relation to his/her person or objects in his/her immediate surroundings, provided that s/he is spoken to slowly and clearly. S/he can read simple sentences and understands, with some help, the basic messages of very short, informative texts (invitations, programs, etc.) about location and time. S/he is capable of basic verbal communication, can ask and answer simple questions. S/he can express his/her basic needs. S/he can fill in personal data (name, address and nationality) in a given form
Attitude
  1. S/he understands and accepts the intercultural characteristics of everyday life in Hungary.
Independence and responsibility
  1. S/he knows the basic strategies of autonomous language learning, and takes an active role in his/her own learning process

Teaching methodology

The course is based on blended learning: with two contact hours per week (2*45 min) and two hours of autono-mous learning (2*45min), where students rely on materials provided by their teacher. In order to increase talking time during contact hours, team and group work methods are applied.

Performance assessment methods

Learning outcomes (as indicated in 2.2.) are evaluated on the basis of participation/class work in classes (including the completion of written assignments) and two mid-term tests (written in the 5th and 10th week), in a ratio of 20 – 40 – 40.
