Objectives

Cultural studies was formed at the meeting point of several theories. The objective of the subject is to familiarize the students with these theoretical antecedents and the various directions that follow from them in the research tradition that we call cultural studies. One of the most important of these steps is a break with the positivist epistemological tradition, according to which reality is something that can be experienced directly. In this sense, culture is always political, because every text has a political meaning, in the sense that it forms a center for the struggle of meanings and bears the mark of power structures. At the same time, receivers create independent readings of the texts according to their own social experiences: they can resist the meanings offered by the text or they can create counter-readings, and in this way oppose the dominant ideology. According to the concept of culture applied to society, culture as a way of life, the manifestation of values and norms can be observed not only in artistic works, but also in the institutionalized or routinized actions of everyday life. This anthropological concept of culture, was and remains decisive in cultural studies. The analysis of culture should not be limited primarily to the analysis of works, but, bearing in mind the processual nature, should focus on the processes in which the works (and not only products of high art) are created, and the audience receives – watches, reads, listens to – them.
