Objectives

The aim of this subject is to develop students' written communication skills in relation to work. The subject focuses on the development of the writing process, with particular emphasis on writing as a tool to support thinking and as a preparation for solution of tasks. We also look at using artificial intelligence, overcoming fears about writing and the obstacles to writing. Language development aims more precise, nuanced language use, by raising awareness of the different linguistic registers.

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. The students understand that writing is a means of structuring ideas and it can play an important preparatory role in solution of tasks.
  2. They know that there are different language registers and understand the differences between informal, semi-formal and formal language as a tool of communication.
  3. They are aware of the limitations and ethical implications of using AI-based tools.
  4. They know the obstacles to writing and effective techniques to overcome them.
Skills
  1. They are able to produce texts appropriate to the purpose of the writing and the intended readership.
  2. They are able to use artificial intelligence to solve problems in a conscious way.
  3. They are able to post-edit texts produced using AI-based online tools.
  4. They can create work-related content for social media, semi-formal texts.
  5. They can apply the structural requirements of longer texts (paragraphs, references back and forth, etc.).
  6. They can write short texts and memos to help you make decisions.
  7. In line with the level, they are able to express in writing some of the communicative intentions related to the work (e.g. reasoning, explaining pros and cons, critiques, suggestions).
  8. They can switch between language registers.

  1. They strive to continuously improve their language competence and writing skills.
  2. They can take feedback on their writing, incorporating lessons learned and knowledge acquired into the writing tasks they undertake in their studies and work.

Teaching methodology

The course focuses on improving writing skills, but also includes discussions in pairs or groups, as well as collaborative tasks in writing.

General Rules

Evaluation comprises of regular attendance, (30% of lessons can be skipped), active participation in lessons, and completing and submitting assignments and tests at a satisfactory level.

In line with the general characteristics of teaching foreign languages, assessment will be applied with a process approach, which also includes optional elements, such as such as assignments, communication exercises.

• The role and functions of writing in today's communication, • the basics of composing texts (paragraphs, references back and forth, etc.), • language register, language solutions adapted to the target group, • writing as a means of structuring ideas, • factors that prevent writing, and techniques for dealing with writer's block, • the use of AI to prepare written assignments, • Post-editing of AI texts and its ethical implications, • social media use, language characteristics of semi-formal texts, • the problem of synonyms, • the writing process.
