Objectives
The main objective of the course is to give an overview of the basic theoretical principles and practical aspects of simultaneous interpreting, the characteristic features of interpreting from the booth, as well as the ethical and professional issues related to this mode of interpreting. Special emphasis is given to enhancing concentration and dual tasking skills, as well as targeted exercises aimed at improving articulation and pronunciation in the B language and conscious voice coaching. Students get familiar with the interpreting equipment in the booth and are informed about the use of technical devices supporting the work of interpreters. They learn to apply a few basic coping strategies used in simultaneous interpreting (time lag, anticipation, padding, salami tech-nique etc.) By the end of the semester students are able to interpret a few-minute speech (primarily from their B language into Hungarian). Their basic simultaneous skills and self-assessment skills are improved by analysing, interpreting and evaluating authentic audio and video recordings in classes and autonomously at home.
Academic results
Knowledge
- are aware of basic presentation skills and observation criteria required for assessing simultaneous interpreting performance;
- are aware of the basic functioning of the interpreting booth and use the available devices consciously;
- are aware of the factors that increase the difficulty of an interpreting task and know the basic coping strategies used for over-coming these difficulties.
Skills
- are capable of rendering a few-minute long, intermediate level speech into the target language in the simultaneous mode;
- coconsciously apply strategies necessary for simultaneous interpreting including increased time-lag techniques, anticipation, padding, salami technique etc.)
- can understand the message of the speech, can render its logical structure and line of though;
- are able to assess their own performance and those of their peers based on various observation criteria.
Attitude
- are open to continuous self-reflection, they can retrospectively assess their own interpreting and can analyse their interpret-ing process
- in light of the expectation posed by the translation industry, they make every effort to do their job at a high quality;
- accept and apply the written and unwritten rules of professional ethics;
- work in simulated interpreting setting in the spirit of booth ethics and collegiality.
Independence and responsibility
- prepare their home assignments in an autonomous and responsible manner, and upload these assignments onto the online education platform until the given deadline
- prepare autonomously and consciously for all (simulated or real) interpreting assignments.
Teaching methodology
Students are required to make presentations according to specific criteria on given topics both in their “A” and “A” language and interpret speeches delivered by other students and their instructor as well as speeches from the Speech Repository, SpeechPool and other sources (e.g. from guest lecturers). They also complete summarising and memory exercises into both language directions.

A hallgatók A és B nyelven tartott előadásait valamint tolmácsolási teljesítményüket különböző módokon (egyéni, társas és csoportos értékelés, szóban és írásban egyaránt) és különböző szempontok alapján (tartalmi, forma, prezen-tációs, stb.) értékeljük. Az egyes fejlesztő értékelési módszerek előtérbe kerülnek.
