Objectives
This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of interpretation as a complex cognitive process and production; to teach the types and techniques of as well as the core competences and strategies needed for spoken language mediation primarily through enabling students to actively, permanently and smoothly use their foreign language speaking and speech comprehension skills. This semester is focused on memory development and mainly aims to teach students the basic skills to be able to complete consecutive and liaison interpretation assignments in short passages without notes.

- • Students are familiar with the differences between translation and interpreting;
- • they know the various types of interpretation;
- • they understand the phases of the interpretation process.
Skills
- • they are able to actively use the basic strategies of simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpretation;
- • they understand the message of the speech, are aware of the macro structure of the text and are able to communicate the personal opinion of the speaker;
- • they are able to assess their own interpreting performance and that of others based on varied criteria;
- • they are able to appropriately prepare for a non-real interpreting assignment (glossary etc.).
Attitude
- • They are ready to constantly practise self-reflection; to analyse and assess their own interpreting and the interpretation process in a retrospective manner;
- • they are expected to deliver quality performance to meet the requirements of the interpretation industry;
- • they accept and abide by the ethical rules of the interpretation profession.
Independence and responsibility
- • They are expected to be responsible for their own learning processes.
Teaching methodology
Students are required to make presentations on given topics both in their “A” and “B” language and interpret speeches delivered by other students and their instructor as well as speeches from the Speech Repository, SpeechPool and other sources (e.g. from guest lecturers). They also complete summarising and memory exercises into both language directions. This semester only includes general topics for interpretation, thematic interpreting (preparation for special topics and use of more complex specialised language) is covered by Interpreting 4.

Performance assessment methods
A hallgatók A és B nyelven tartott előadásait valamint tolmácsolási teljesítményüket különböző módokon (egyéni, társas és csoportos értékelés, szóban és írásban egyaránt) és különböző szempontok alapján (tar-talmi, forma, prezentációs, stb.) értékeljük. Az egyes fejlesztő értékelési módszerek előtérbe kerülnek.
