Objectives

The aim of the course is to discuss the actual issues of local and urban development, especially the impact of the different social processes and institutional frameworks on the local development decisions. The decision makers face a variety of influences arising from the interrelations among the different levels of governance and the economic, political, environmental, demographic and other conflicts and potentials. Such issues will be analysed and response will be outlined for responding the challenges of regional and local development and planning. International, inter-regional and inter-urban comparisons will be presented to highlight the variety of territorial differences of characteristics, issues and challenges as well as development initiatives in the various contexts. Emphasis will be made on the interrelations of planning, decision making and implementation, and the requirements of integrated approach and the cooperation of stakeholders will be highlighted. Besides discussing the theoretical issues practical examples of planning and development processes will also be presented.

Teaching methodology

Lectures, oral and written in-class and home assignments, tasks performed independently and in group.
