Objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce and practice students in work-related communication situations that require oral or written mediation between two languages (and cultures). This involves the development of skills such as summarising heard and written texts, notetaking, prompt writing, switching between registers (e.g. informal-formal) from foreign language to Hungarian and from Hungarian to foreign language. Artificial intelligence is now a key tool in language mediation, and therefore, the subject aims to introduce students to the databases, technology and AI tools that can be used in translating and proofreading texts written in foreign languages, as well as in interpreting.

Knowledge
- The students are familiar with work-related communication situations that require oral or written mediation between two languages (and cultures).
- They are familiar with the different forms of language mediation, the differences between translation and interpretation, and the basic concepts related to language technology.
- They know the main databases as well as technological and AI tools used in proofreading and language mediation of texts written in foreign languages.
- They know the different steps of language mediation process and the factors relevant to quality assurance.
Skills
- They can convert low-register text to high-register text both orally and in writing.
- They have the ability to judge and analyse the style, register and audience of a written or spoken text, and find their equivalents in the target language.
- They can decide which technological and AI tools can be used most effectively for different language mediation tasks (translation of written text into written form using appropriate technological tools, post-editing of machine translation, translation of written text into oral form (sight translation), interpreting short texts consecutively without notes or with notetaking).
- They can decide whether a professional is needed in a working environment, when a communication situation requires the use of a foreign (intermediary) language.
Attitude
- They recognise that language mediation requires not only language competences but also specialised expertise.
- They are aware of language/translation problems in their own field of expertise.
- They become open to the ethical issues raised by the use of language technology and artificial intelligence.
- They show interest in developments and innovations in language technology and are able to judge their quality critically.
Independence and responsibility
- They act in a responsible manner when ordering language services, and can judge when a professional is needed.
- They have the appropriate strategies to get informed of topics related to language mediation independently.
- They can independently find and evaluate language technology tools; and assess their applicability in their own field of expertise.
Teaching methodology
We primarily use cooperation as a teaching method during the course. When working in pairs or in groups, during the continuous interaction, the students have plenty of opportunity to talk and discuss certain topics.

General Rules
Evaluation comprises of regular attendance, (30% of lessons can be skipped), active participation in lessons, and completing and submitting assignments and tests at a satisfactory level.
Performance assessment methods
In line with the general characteristics of teaching foreign languages, assessment will be applied with a process approach, which also includes optional elements, such as such as assignments, communication exercises.
