Objectives

In this subject, students are offered a theoretical basis for practising interpreting as a language mediation activity. The sub-ject allows an insight into basic theoretical issues including interpreting models, empirical research, the history of interpret-ing, memory, cognitive processes, product and effect, discourse and interaction, professional and ethical issues, technology, etc. Within this subject, students acquire background knowledge in possession of which they will be able to provide interpret-ing services at a high standard, in line with the customers’ expectations and in compliance with professional ethics.

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. are familiar with basic keywords, paradigms and models of Interpreting Studies (IS);
  2. have basic knowledge about major fields of investigation in IS, they are familiar with basic notions and understand basic processes;
  3. are familiar with types of basic empirical research and know the basics of IS research methodology;
  4. are familiar with the latest technological de vices and know how these tools can support the process of interpreting.
Skills
  1. Based on their basic knowledge on IS research methodology, they are able to conduct a mini research project within the framework of the subject entitled diploma work;
  2. able to apply the theoretical knowledge in the field (e.g. Effort Model, interpreting strategies, etc.), they consciously monitor themselves and their own performance.
Attitude
  1. do their utmost in developing both hard and soft skills they have identified within the framework of the subject;
  2. are open to professional novelties
  3. have a critical approach towards trends and tendencies of the profession; are critical of their own professional per-formance

Teaching methodology

The presentations will be made available to trainees in a video format on the online educational platform. They will be re-quired to acquire the material autonomously, and their knowledge will be tested via online educational platform tests. As for the reading list, their knowledge will also be tested via online educational platform tests. During the semester trainees are required to submit a paper on a topic selected from a list, and, depending on the number of trainees in that year, they will be required to prepare one or two presentations on selected topics.
