Objectives

The subject focuses on familiarising trainees with the fundamental aspects of liaison (dialogue) interpreting as a complex process and production where the interpreter mediates in a dialogue with code switching and where they need to quickly switch between languages and display active communication skills while also paying special attention to the importance of non-verbal elements of face-to-face communication. Trainees acquire a control over their feelings, reactions and gestures and learn to harmonise their verbal and non-verbal behaviour.

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. are aware of competences required for liaison/dialogue interpreting
  2. are familiar with the different modes in interpreting and are aware of the techniques they can use during dialogue interpret-ing
  3. have an understanding of the different phases in the process of liaison interpreting
  4. are aware of the significance of non-verbal signs in communication.
Skills
  1. are able to sustain active listening
  2. are able to understand and analyse speeches delivered in the foreign language (at macrolevel, and key word level and the lev-el of logical analysis)
  3. are able to code-switch between the different languages (B-A-B);
  4. consciously manage and coordinate the switches
  5. are able to provide liaison interpreting services in real-life situations in general topics between private individuals, as well as between a private individual and a representative of an authority
Attitude
  1. are open to and interested in topical issues (social, political, economic, cultural, etc.);
  2. work towards self-reflection in assessing their own interpreting performance;
Independence and responsibility
  1. are able to work with topics, collect necessary and relevant information and prepare on the basis of the vocabulary and termi-nology they collect
  2. take responsibility for their own performance

Teaching methodology

Preparation and active participation in class work, assessing video recordings in class, memory and situation exercises, devising new situations and preparing role cards, preparing glossaries, mini exam at the end of the semester.
