Objectives

The course is aimed to help students learn about the various features of Hungarian culture and expand their knowledge of Hungary in comparison with their own culture. In line with their studies, they get an insight into some areas of Hungarian science, economy and technology that are also relevant from a cultural aspect. The course focuses on improving cultural and intercultural competencies.

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. The students acquire a basic knowledge of various areas in Hungarian history, culture and economy.
  2. They understand the key differences between Hungarian culture and that of their home country.
Skills
  1. They are able to talk about the basic characteristics of Hungarian culture.
  2. They are familiar with the behavioural norms expected in everyday life, and able to use them successfully in everyday communication and in their university studies.
  3. They are able to discuss the differences between two or more cultures even when it comes to sensitive subjects.
Attitude
  1. They strive to understand and accept the norms, expectations and characteristics of another culture. They take these into consideration in an everyday and also in a professional environment.
  2. They feel the need to communicate with their foreign peers and they are open to other cultures.
Independence and responsibility
  1. They take responsibility for improving their cultural and intercultural competencies.

Teaching methodology

During the learning process students often work in pairs or groups to help them get to know their peers from other cultural backgrounds. This way we improve their level of tolerance, inclusion and acceptance.

Materials supporting learning

  • Aktuális, Magyarországra vonatkozó anyagok: újságcikkek, videók, internetes felületek, ezekre épülő feladatok. Topical materials about Hungary: newspaper articles, videos, online sites and tasks built on them.

General Rules

Evaluation comprises of regular attendance, (30% of lessons can be skipped), active participation in lessons, and completing and submitting assignments and tests at a satisfactory level.

Performance assessment methods

During the course participants complete communications tasks in the classes, as well as minor presentations and projects. The students are engaged in continuous self-assessment during the course.
