Economic Geography and Geopolitics - BMEGT42A100

The aim of the course is for the students to have comprehensive knowledge of the prominent geographical features and problems of the economy, and to know their treatment options, both in Hungary and in the global world. In addition, they should know the territorial organization of the world economy, the real and virtual connections from the point of view of the world economy, the importance of strategic geographical locations in the world economy of the 21st century. The aim of the subject is to present and synthesize the traditional (so-called orthodox) and new-approach (so-called critical) geopolitical trends, both theoretically and in practice, based on the analysis of today's prominent international political events. The purpose of the course is also to present the development of geopolitical thinking, its essence, territorial perspective and, above all, the main works of the main representatives of the orthodox geopolitical scientific field.

1. The student knows the basics of the functioning of the world economy and world politics, and the main territorial characteristics.
2. In particular, the significance of the great powers' geopolitical/geoeconomic strategies and their impact on global, mega-regional regional levels and nation-state processes.
3. Furthermore, the student understands the basic concepts of geopolitics and is able to interpret their impact on the world's economic and political system.

1. The student is able to present some regional geographical features based on what he has learned.
2. They are able to understand the main regional economic and social problems and to look for connections (causes, main processes, consequences, solution options).
3. They are able to interpret the geopolitical strategies of great powers and to analyze the most important elements of "hard power", "soft power" and the exercise of power through economic means.
4. They can assess how all this affects low- and middle-income countries.

1. The student can professionally interpret the local effects of world economic and world political processes, the significance of a given world economic and world political situation.
2. Later, during the years of active employment and as a responsible intellectual, they will be able to realistically interpret current world economic and world political news.
3. They will be able to independently increase their knowledge of economic geography and geopolitics in the future.

1. The student can always responsibly assess the effects of current world economic and world political events at the workplace in his field of expertise.
2. Through this, they can place their workplace in the international space, and as a decision-maker, they can responsibly position the operation of their workplace at different regional levels.
3. They will be able to independently apply regional geographical knowledge, to recognize the scale and connections of problems, to compile solutions and proposals when highlighting geographical topics and challenges.

Lectures, problem solving, written and oral communication, use of IT tools and techniques, optional tasks and plans prepared independently and in group work.

Evaluation of the learning outcomes stated in point 2.2.: summative evaluation of the competences acquired during the semester (mid-term exams);

Summative evaluation of learning outcomes (summative assessment): a complex, written evaluation method of the subject and knowledge and ability-type competence elements in the form of a mid-term exam. The test focuses on the assessment of the acquired knowledge and its application, thus focusing on problem recognition and solution. The course material on which the evaluation is based it is determined by the lecturers of the subject for both mid-term exams, the available working time is 90 minutes. Both mid-term exams must earn at least 50% in order to pass the subject.

1) The summative assessments can be retaken or corrected for the first time during the retake period free of charge. In the event of a correction, the new result always overwrites the old one. 2) If the student is unable to obtain a grade other than 'Fail' even with the replacement according to point 1), he/she may make a second attempt to successfully complete the course by paying the fee specified in the regulations.

In order to achieve the learning outcomes set out in point 2.2., the subject consists of the following thematic blocks. In the syllabi of the courses announced in each semester, these topics are scheduled according to the calendar and other conditions.
