Objectives
This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in translation. Students are introduced to roles and services in the translation industry; learn the basic skills on how to manage a business and become familiar with relevant laws and regulations and international standards. They learn about domestic and international professional communities; they develop skills to be able to make responsible decisions in professional/ethical issues indispensable for their market activities.
Academic results
Knowledge
- • Students are introduced to available roles and services in the translation and interpreting industry in the Hungarian market,
- • they are familiar with the activities of domestic and international (advocacy) groups and professional or-ganisations, international standards; are aware of the key (current) market problems and trends,
- • they are familiar with the financial and business aspects of this profession, know the language services market to a sufficient degree (primarily domestically),
- • they are aware of the tax, financial and other aspects of freelance translation/interpreting services provided as an independent contractor, forming the basics of contractor competencies,
- They are familiar with what specific interpreting jobs involve in terms of content and professional re-quirements.
Skills
- • They know how to issue an invoice and enter into a service contract,
- • they can make informed decisions in professional/ethical issues indispensable for their market activities.
Attitude
- • They closely follow the progress, trends in their profession and the changes in the relevant laws and regu-lations,
- • they smoothly adapt to changing circumstances and working conditions in their profession,
- • they know how to solve problems in a creative way in their professional activities and careers.
Independence and responsibility
- • They comply with the ethical rules of their profession and represent the fundamental professional and eth-ical values of interpreting to the best of their ability,
- • they do not disclose confidential information they become aware of,
- • they handle documents received in a responsible manner.
Teaching methodology
Resources for this course primarily include live/video presentations, selected partly from presentations delivered by course instructors and partly by professionals active in the domestic and international market. The processing of these presentations and the assessment of the understanding of the knowledge and skills taught is supported by tests and worksheets. To discuss ethical issues, a forum is organised, domestic advocacy groups introduce themselves in an in-person meeting including a Q&A session where guests answer questions from the students.

Önálló munka a prezentációkhoz köthető anyagok alapján. Az előadások alapján Moodle-tesztek, a Moodle-ba feltöltött tananyaghoz és kiegészítő anyaghoz önálló feldolgozásra alkalmas feladatok. Az aláíráshoz a félévközi tesztek, illetve a félév végi összefoglaló teszt kitöltése is kötelező (min. 60%).
