Objectives

This optional course is designed to teach students the core skills in interpreting, the major types of interpreting and the special strategies related to each interpreting type. In the first semester of this two-semester course, students learn the basics of sight interpretation, liaison and consecutive interpreting by completing beginner level interpreting exercises.

Academic results

  2. • they are aware of the principles of sight interpretation and know the basic transfer techniques;
  3. • they are familiar with the relevant factors for consecutive and liaison interpreting and the expectations arising from their role as a language service provider;
  4. • they know the basics of consecutive note-taking techniques.
Skills
  1. • They are able to promptly sight-translate longer written texts from a foreign language into their native language;
  2. • they are able to use the basic interpreting techniques in harmony with the specific situation and type of interpreting in liaison and consecutive mode;
  3. • they are able to retrieve the key elements of short speeches on general issues without taking notes, relying solely on their memory and/or by using simple consecutive notes.

  2. • based on their understanding of the aspects determining the assessment of the quality of interpreting, they provide constructive feedback on the interpreting performance of others.
Independence and responsibility
  1. • They study the subject matter of their interpreting job independently and with the thoroughness and care required by professional interpreters;
  2. • they regularly take advantage of the recommended opportunities to independently practise their skills in classroom sessions.

Teaching methodology

Sight translation, liaison and consecutive interpreting exercises made more complex on a gradual basis (written texts, short interviews, 3 to 4 minute speeches, from a foreign language into Hungarian and from Hungarian into a foreign language); introduction of the basic consecutive note-taking techniques through examples, building the foundation of student note-taking techniques with specific exercises to improve skills; student presentations, the-matic interpreting projects; situational exercises to simulate real-life interpreting situations; guided autonomous practice exercises with individual or group feedback.
