Objectives
The course is aimed to help students reach CEFR’s A1.1 level in Hungarian language by the end of the term. After completing the course the students will be able to communicate in a very simple way in the most basic situations and have the key cultural knowledge required for everyday communication. The course focuses on improving verbal communication.
Academic results
Knowledge
- • The students are familiar with the Hungarian alphabet and the phenomenon of vowel harmony.
- • They know the basic rules of Hungarian grammar (definite and indefinite articles, numbers, word order in questions and answers, basics of conjugation, plural of nouns, the three directions phenomenon, etc).
- • They are familiar with the basic rules of politeness, addressing people informally/ formally.
- • They have some knowledge of everyday Hungarian culture.
Skills
- • They are able to read simple sentences, understand the basic messages of very short, informative texts.
- • They understand basic words and conversational phrases referring to them or concrete things around them, providing that the speaker articulates slowly and clearly, they find their way around basic situations.
- • They are able to complete simple forms, adding their personal data, such as their name, address, citizenship and studies (where, what).
- • They are able to have very basic conversations, ask and answer simple questions about themselves. They are able to express their basic needs, ask for help, get information in everyday situations.
Attitude
- • The students understand and accept the set of rules applied in everyday Hungarian culture, which are dif-ferent from that of their own.
Independence and responsibility
- • They acquire the most basic strategies for learning a language and play an active role in their own learning process.
Teaching methodology
During this learning process we primarily focus on developing speaking skills and comprehension. During the learning process students often work in pairs or groups, they are given an opportunity to speak, to participate in situ-ational exercises, while grammatical phenomena are used in realistic, lifelike texts.

General Rules
Completion requirements: active participation in classes (maximum absence rate: 30%), completion of assignments and / or progress tests issued during the semester.
Performance assessment methods
We use two tests during the term to measure the acquired knowledge and the ability to use it. The assessment also includes the students’ participation in the classes during the whole term.
