Objectives

In this semester, students learn about the SDL computer-assisted translation software suite and its functions and learn the skills to use this programme on a basic level as well as learn terminology, methodology and specialised subjects. They learn how to use the SDL Trados Studio and MultiTerm and the import, export functions required for their use. Students also become familiar with the basic principles of revision, and cover professional, business and ethical considerations related to machine-translation post-editing (MTPE).

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. Students are familiar with how the SDL Trados software suite works and know its key functions. (Recogni-tion of terms in source text; integration of target language terms into text; appropriate electronic recording and storing of terminology data; preparation of terminology data and completed translation projects for future use; creation, use and reusability of translation memories; use of additional resources; quality assurance.)
  2. They learn how to complete translations based on the required format and by the specified deadline.
  3. Are aware of the basic principles and business aspects of revision. Are familiar with professional, business and ethical considerations related to machine-translation post-editing (MTPE).
Skills
  1. They are able to efficiently use the SDL Trados software suite.
  2. They are able to use previously learned basic translation strategies in the computer-assisted translation environment as well and based on those, deliver quality translations in harmony with specific client and stylistic requirements.
  3. They are able to identify the key terminology of technical texts and enter this into bilingual glossaries and terminology databases adding essential metadata and to use it in the computer-assisted translation environment.
  4. In team projects, they are able to carry out the functions within a translation agency they were assigned to, in a server-based environment (translator, revisor, terminology specialist, PM etc.)
Attitude
  1. They are expected to use their knowledge about culture and norms in the source and target languages in an optimal way in the computer-assisted translation environment.
  2. In order to support terminology consistency, they are expected to find the existing target language equiva-lents of foreign words used in the source texts.
Independence and responsibility
  1. Students recognise the problems/errors related to the translation of the terminology into the target language, they independently classify and weigh these errors and are able to defend their own translation solutions.
  2. They are able to revise their own translations and/or the translation of others in the computer-assisted translation environment using the quality assurance features.

Teaching methodology

Students learn to use the SDL / MultiTerm translation management software based on a timeline determined by their teacher and are expected to independently improve their skills. In addition to the teaching methods of the course, the internet and the digital media is also used to help students learn these skills. Students have access to the course material via their own Moodle account. They are expected to complete their home assignments independently and submit them via Moodle by the required deadline. Students may be required to work independently, in pairs or in a team in projects completed in or out of the classroom.

General Rules

Az oktató alapvetően a fejlesztő értékelés szempontjait tartja szem előtt: a hallgató többféle formában kaphat visz-szajelzést a félév során, pl. hibajelölés, írásos és szóbeli értékelés. A féléves értékelés alapja a szoftverhasználati kompetencia (önállóság, hatékonyság, pontosság, igényesség, önel-lenőrzés) és az órai munka, valamint a házi feladatok elvégzése.
