Objectives

Based on the course ‘Specialised translation and terminology 1’, this course aims to teach students further special features and key terms (bilingual terminology) of economic, technical and EU-specific texts. It uses even more specific texts requiring an advanced level of subject-matter expertise to improve skills in specialised translation.

Academic results

  1. • Students are familiar with the linguistic, (inter)textual conventions of specific text types in economic, tech-nical and EU-specific areas.
  2. • They know the essential key terms (terminology) of the relevant language pairs.
  3. • They are familiar with the transfer operations, translation strategies to be used in these texts.
Skills
  1. • They are able to recognise translation and terminology problems in these specific texts.
  2. • They are able to deploy their subject-matter expertise and use the appropriate grammatical and lexical transfer operations and translation strategies.
  3. • They are able to describe and explain terminology phenomena and translation strategies.
  4. • They are able to assess the reliability of their sources (databases, dictionaries, parallel texts).
Attitude
  1. • They are expected to constantly monitor changes in these areas, in particular the introduction of new terms.
Independence and responsibility
  1. • They assume responsibility for the quality of their translations and comply with deadlines.

Teaching methodology

They receive translation assignments every week. The key priority in this course is to teach students the essential key terms used in these areas, students also carry our terminology work related to a text or a subject-specific area (e.g. collection of terms, creation of glossaries). Revision and team translation exercises are designed to improve soft skills (independence, responsibility, self-assessment and group assessment)

Materials supporting learning

  • fordítási feladatok elvégzését az oktató által összeállított írott vagy szóbeli magyarázatok és az oktató által ajánlott további szakirodalmi források segítik.
  • Assistance to the completion of translation assignments is provided through written or oral explanations created and literature recommended by the instructor.

Topics covered during the term
