Objectives

This course is designed to consolidate the interpretation strategies based on the competences learned in the previous two semesters. It further improves the skills necessary for consecutive and liaison interpreting and introduces the basics for simultaneous interpretation. Special emphasis is placed on the development of general background information, on detailed and more precise note-taking and preparation for non-real interpreting assignments (e.g. writing glossaries).

Academic results

Knowledge
  1. • Students are familiar with the various modes of interpreting, the related strategies and the basic terminology of interpretation;
  2. • they know the skills and aspects relating to presentations;
  3. • they are aware of the monitoring criteria for the assessment of interpretation.
Skills
  1. • They are able to interpret moderately complex speeches in consecutive mode, taking notes, from a foreign language into Hungarian; to interpret a dialogue including multiple question and answer blocks with code switching, taking notes; to interpret a shorter foreign language speech in simultaneous mode into Hungarian;
  2. • they are able to actively use the strategies of simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpretation;
  3. • they understand the message of the speech, are aware of the macro structure of the text and are able to communicate the personal opinion of the speaker;
  4. • they are able to assess their own interpreting performance and that of others based on varied criteria;
  5. • they are able to appropriately prepare for a non-real interpreting assignment (glossary etc.).
Attitude
  1. • They are ready to constantly practise self-reflection; to analyse and assess their own interpreting and the interpretation process in a retrospective manner;
  2. • they are expected to deliver quality performance to meet the requirements of the interpretation industry;
  3. • they accept and abide by the ethical rules of the interpretation profession.
Independence and responsibility
  1. • They are expected to be responsible for their own learning processes.

Teaching methodology

Students are required to make presentations on given topics both in their “A” and “B” language and interpret speeches delivered by other students and their instructor as well as speeches from the Speech Repository, SpeechPool and other sources (e.g. from guest lecturers). They also complete summarising and memory exercises into both language directions. This semester only includes general topics for interpretation, thematic interpreting (preparation for special topics and use of more complex specialised language) is covered by Interpreting 4.

A hallgatók A és B nyelven tartott előadásait valamint tolmácsolási teljesítményüket különböző módokon (egyéni, társas és csoportos értékelés, szóban és írásban egyaránt) és különböző szempontok alapján (tartalmi, forma, pre-zentációs, stb.) értékeljük. Az egyes fejlesztő értékelési módszerek előtérbe kerülnek.
