In the history of photography, image creation and theoretical reflection have always interacted in such a way that the often artificial dichotomy of theory and practice was called into question. Photographic practices have created many types of genres, systems of interpretation and evaluation. During the course, one of our goals will be to examine these practices, genres, interpretation and evaluation systems by reflecting on the properties and possibilities of the medium. We also ask what conceptual frameworks are suitable for analyzing interpretation and evaluation systems and mechanisms. In order to examine the conceptual frameworks, we will absolutely need to map the relevant image (photographic) properties that become the subject of interpretation and evaluation. The question of photographic relevance is closely related to the given (social, cultural, historical) context, as well as to the genres to which the interpreted and evaluated photos belong. Our working method will be partly a joint discussion of some important questions and literature, and partly an analysis of case studies based on the research projects of the course participants.

The topics are examined through reading literature and case studies. During the semester, students prepare an analytical study of a photographic phenomenon of their choice.

The criterion for signature is attendance at classes and regular participation in seminar discussions. Seminar paper (written exam): 20-25 thousand characters. If the students submit the preliminary version of their thesis by the end of the 12th week, the course instructor will comment on it within a few days. (Submitting a preliminary version is not mandatory.) The final version of the seminar paper must be submitted by the end of the 14th week. 50 points can be obtained for the seminar paper. Each student gives two project reports during the semester. You can earn 25 points each for reports. Students must submit all written assignments in electronic form (Word document, without conversion to PDF or PPP). Documents must not be larger than 500 KB, so inserted images must be sized accordingly.

Pontatlan idézés, hivatkozások és a bibliográfia hiánya vagy pontatlansága esetén a dolgozat nem értékelhető. A vizsgadolgozatokkal szemben támasztott részletes formai és tartalmi követelményeket a tanszéki honlapról letölthető Útmutató a Szociológia és Kommunikáció Tanszék kurzusainak és képzéseinek követelményeként benyújtandó vizsgadolgozatok elkészítéséhez című segédlet tartalmazza. A szeminárium dolgozat elkészítésének alternatív formája egy gyakorlati projekt és elemzés. A gyakorlati projekt lehet fotográfiai (például tematikus képsorozat elkészítése), kritikai (például 4-5 kiállításról írt kritika), illetve más, a hallgatók által javasolt (és az oktató által elfogadott) projekt. A szemináriumi dolgozat ebben az esetben a gyakorlati projektre reflektáló kritikai elemzés. Az elemzésnek ebben az esetben is meg kell felelnie a szemináriumi dolgozattal szemben támasztott követelményeknek és szempontoknak, terjedelme azonban lehet rövidebb is (10-15 ezer leütés).
