Objectives

The subject is aimed to prepare students studying engineering in German for their studies in Germany. The main aim of the subject is to develop the language skills that are typical for the use of language in higher education studies, therefore students will systematise and deepen the vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary for their studies abroad, and develop their text comprehension and composition skills (understanding lectures, note taking, summarising, debating, writing a summary). The students are also informed about the TestDaF language examination required for accredited terms at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

  1. The students have the linguistic knowledge (vocabulary and structure) needed to study in a foreign language.
  2. They know the syntactic and lexical features of scientific texts.
  3. They can distinguish between the characteristics of formal and everyday language use in writing and speaking.

  5. They know the types of TestDaF exam questions.

Teaching methodology

During the learning process students often work in pairs or groups to give them more opportunity to practice their speaking skills.

Materials supporting learning

  • Jegyzet, ill. a témák feldolgozásához előkészített videós és hanganyagok, szükség esetén nyelvtani gyakorlókönyv.
  • Video and audio materials to be used with the course notes and the various topics, if necessary, grammar practice books.

General Rules

Evaluation comprises of regular attendance, (30% of lessons can be skipped), active participation in lessons, and completing and submitting assignments and tests at a satisfactory level. Students who reach the language level required for participating in higher education (around C1) receive a certificate at the end of the term.

Performance assessment methods

In line with the general characteristics of teaching foreign languages, assessment will be applied with a process approach, which also includes optional elements, such as assignments, communication exercises.
