Objectives

The aim of the subject is to support students in their research methodology activities in English. By completing the subject, students will develop their writing skills, learn the main structural rules of the types of texts required for university and academic life (theses, dissertations, scientific papers), and deal with the problems of bibliography, references and plagiarism.

Knowledge
  1. The students are familiar with the linguistic features of theses, dissertations and scientific papers.
  2. They understand the structure and organisation of the above types of texts.
  3. They can distinguish formal written (scientific, informative) language and everyday language, both in terms of vocabulary and grammar.
Skills
  1. They are able to create the types of texts needed for university and academic life.
  2. They can avoid the pitfalls of plagiarism.
  3. They can add in-text citations and bibliographies in the required formats.
  4. They can use the various reference managers and online collections (e.g. Zotero, MyBib, Academic Phrasebank).
  5. They are able to describe graphs, tables, statistics.
Attitude
  1. They strive to create high-quality, linguistically precise texts.
  2. They are open to use the latest online tools.
Independence and responsibility
  1. They take responsibility for improving their own written communication.

Teaching methodology

The course focuses on improving writing skills, but also includes discussions in pairs or groups, as well as collaborative tasks in writing.

  • Video and written materials to be used for the various topics.

General Rules

Evaluation comprises of regular attendance, (30% of lessons can be skipped), active participation in lessons, and completing and submitting assignments and tests at a satisfactory level.

Performance assessment methods

In line with the general characteristics of teaching foreign languages, assessment will be applied with a process approach, which also includes optional elements, such as essays, summaries, the abstracts of scientific articles.
