Objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce students to the dimensions of technical and business communication beyond language competence, with particular emphasis on the different forms and technological tools of language mediation, the opportunities and pitfalls of using AI-based language tools and translation engines, and the role of terminology management in technical documentation and technical writing. Behind these dimensions, there is now a separate, multi-billion dollar language industry that influences both corporate and national competitiveness. Therefore, the further aim of the subject is to equip future technical and business professionals with the skills to successfully navigate this industry: to identify tasks that require specific expertise and to make better informed decisions when ordering language and technology services from the industry.

Knowledge
- They know the actors and services of the language industry, the processes in the industry and the role of artificial intelligence in these processes.
- They are familiar with the basic concepts of the language industry, language mediation and terminology management, such as language service provider (LSP), computer-assisted translation (CAT), translation memory (TM), terminology database (TB), machine translation (MT), machine translation post-editing (MTPE), etc.
- They know the jobs requiring specific expertise in the language industry, such as specialist translator, interpreter, proofreader, vendor manager, terminologist, project manager, language engineer, etc.
- They know the different forms of oral and written language mediation, such as specialised translation, localisation, audiovisual translation, liaison interpreting, consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, etc.
- They know the main technological tools used in translation, interpreting and terminology management.
- They are aware of the main features and pitfalls of AI-based machine translation engines.
- They know the technical writing process, in particular the role of terminology and translation in technical documentation.
- They know the linguistic, terminological and translation requirements of the standards for technical documentation.
Skills
- They can name the actors, processes and areas of the language industry.
- They can distinguish between different types of language services (specialised translation, liaison interpretation, consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, etc.).
- They are able to understand the processes of the language industry in a technical and economic context, both nationally and internationally.
- They are able to identify the linguistic and mediation tasks that require specific expertise beyond language competence.
- They are able to distinguish between conceptual and linguistic translation/terminology problems.
- They are able to identify the stages of the technical writing process where terminology and translation work is involved.
Attitude
- They are interested in what is happening in the language industry and keep up to date with what is relevant to their field of expertise,
- They recognise that language mediation and terminology management require specialised expertise beyond language competence, and understands how they, as clients, can help language professionals.
- They are more aware of the terminology and translation and interpretation needs in their field of expertise.
Independence and responsibility
- They have the appropriate strategies to find their way around topics related to language mediation.
- They act responsibly when ordering language services, and can judge when a professional is needed.
- They take responsibility for their own (professional) role in shaping the terminology of their field of expertise.
